She stated: “We already have rovers travelling to Mars, which is wonderful. “Setting foot on Mars must have felt similar to reaching the Moon in the 1960s.”It’s a completely new frontier, and that is something else. Currently, the goal is for humans to reach Mars by the 2040s, which I would enthusiastically support.
“Obviously, there are practical hurdles to producing a smooth soft landing. However, keeping astronauts physically and psychologically fit in a capsule for such a long time is a huge task.
Rosemary, who became an astronaut in April, was chosen from 22,000 applicants to join the European Space Agency’s astronaut corps in 2022 after an 18-month recruitment period.
The astrophysicist, who grew up in Brighton, stated that her first mission will be a six-month expedition to the International Space Station.
Rosemary Theresa Coogan (born 1991) is an astrophysicist and UK astronaut from Northern Ireland. Her study focuses on galaxy evolution and space-based telescopes. She is a member of ESA’s European Astronaut Corps.
Coogan relocated to the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics.Coogan used space telescopes in Germany to study galaxy evolution. Coogan joined the CNES in 2022 and works on the Euclid and James Webb Space Telescope projects.
In 2022, Coogan was chosen by the European Astronaut Corps to join the European Space Agency Astronaut Group. She stated that she applied to the space programme because she wanted to get “hands-on” and contribute as much as possible from orbit. Coogan graduated from ESA’s Basic Training curriculum at the European Astronaut Centre on April 22, 2024, along with her classmates from “The Hoppers” group.
