The Eras Tour concert film by Taylor Swift and AMC has made an impressive debut as the second-highest domestic opener of October, grossing $92.8 million in its first three days in theaters. While falling slightly short of AMC’s expectations and box office analysts’ predictions of a $100 million-plus opening, the film’s performance is considered a massive success within its genre and the constraints of its release.
Despite the high base price for tickets, which was 40% higher than traditional movie releases, the film faced some challenges. Last-minute Thursday night previews garnered $2.8 million, contributing to a total of $37.5 million on its opening day. In comparison, the highest October opener, Warner Bros.’ “Joker,” secured $13.3 million from Thursday previews, leading to a $39.3 million opening day. “Joker” achieved a total of $96.2 million domestically for the entire weekend.
The Eras Tour film’s success is attributed to its uniqueness in the theatrical world, with no concert film having generated such rapid fervor for ticket sales or created significant demand with theater chains. Analysts described it as a “unicorn” in the genre.
Despite challenges, the film is expected to continue breaking records, and its high base ticket prices suggest the potential for a substantial overall box office bump. However, comparisons with other releases may be challenging, given the film’s weekend-only engagements. Predicting its second-week drop is also uncertain, as the lack of mid-week showings could impact foot traffic.
AMC reported that the Eras Tour concert film has amassed $123.5 million globally, putting it on track to surpass the $262.5 million international haul of “Michael Jackson’s This Is It” from 2009. The film’s theatrical run is scheduled to conclude on November 5.
