Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concert film continues to break records, securing $31 million during its second weekend in theaters, making it the highest-grossing concert film at the domestic box office. Despite a 66% drop from its first weekend, the film’s performance is comparable to blockbuster hits from major franchises like Marvel, DC, and Star Wars.
Swifties, as Taylor Swift’s fans are known, contributed to the strong second weekend, and the film has now crossed the $100 million mark in the U.S. and Canada. This makes it the first concert film to achieve such a feat, with just Thursday’s ticket sales accounting for nearly $6 million.
The Eras Tour film has amassed an estimated $129.8 million at the domestic box office, with international figures from AMC yet to be updated. If the film surpasses $262.5 million by the end of its run in November, it will become the highest-grossing global concert movie, surpassing the record set by 2009’s “Michael Jackson’s This Is It.”
The film’s success is seen as a positive addition to the October movie marketplace, bringing in much-needed foot traffic during a quarter affected by Hollywood’s labor strikes. The Eras Tour concert film has already set records for the widest domestic release for a concert film, opening in over 3,850 locations and achieving the highest opening weekend domestically for a concert film, surpassing Miley Cyrus’ “Best of Both Worlds Concert” from 2008.
