Two months after Kansas City Chiefs’ kicker Harrison Butker described women as “homemakers,” Serena Williams responded to his remarks while hosting the ESPY Awards.
At the ceremony, Serena Williams addressed Butker’s comments while discussing women’s sports with her sister Venus Williams and comedian Quinta Brunson. In front of the audience, Venus encouraged everyone to “enjoy women’s sports like you would any other sports, because they are sports.” Serena then added, “Except you, Harrison Butker. We don’t need you,” followed by Brunson’s quip, “At all. Like, ever.”
This exchange followed Butker’s controversial speech at Benedictine College in Kansas in May, where he spoke against abortion, criticized Pride Month as a “deadly sin,” and condemned COVID-19 lockdown measures. His remarks about women in the workplace, claiming they were told “the most diabolical lies” and suggesting their most important role is as “homemakers,” sparked significant backlash.
Although Butker wasn’t shown on camera during the ESPY event, he later accused Serena Williams of using women’s sports to create division. “I thought Mrs. Williams was a great host and applaud her for using her platform to express her beliefs on a variety of topics,” he said. “Sports are supposed to be the great unifier, and at an event dedicated to celebrating a diverse group of men and women who have accomplished great feats, she used it as an opportunity to disinvite those with whom she disagrees from supporting fellow athletes.”
