Kamala Harris is set to deliver a public address later today, after calling Donald Trump to congratulate him on his victory in the 2024 presidential election. In a discussion on Wednesday afternoon, the current Vice President and Democratic candidate emphasized “the importance of a peaceful transfer of power and the responsibility of being a president for all Americans,” as stated in a release from Harris’ campaign.
Harris had initially planned to speak on election night at Howard University in Washington, D.C., but postponed her appearance as it became evident that her Republican opponent, Donald Trump, had secured a path to victory. As of Wednesday afternoon, Trump had clinched enough key battleground states, including Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Wisconsin, to surpass the required electoral votes. Trump is also leading in the national popular vote, marking the first time a Republican has done so since George W. Bush in 2004.
Trump marked his victory with a statement describing it as “an unprecedented achievement in the history of our country.” In his victory speech, he pledged to “fight for you, your family, and your future,” promising that his administration would usher in “a new era of prosperity for America.”
The race saw stark contrasts between the two candidates, with Trump consolidating support in conservative strongholds while Harris carried liberal states from New York to California. Despite a surge in popularity after becoming the Democratic nominee, Harris faced challenges, including underperforming with key demographics such as women and Black and Latino voters compared to Joe Biden’s performance in 2020. Her campaign also struggled to offer a compelling economic message, amid concerns about rising inflation.
Trump’s victory marks a significant shift in U.S. politics, with the Republican Party also regaining control of key congressional seats, strengthening its position ahead of the new presidential term. If Republicans secure control of both the House and Senate, Trump will have more leverage to advance his policy agenda, including major tax cuts and immigration reforms.
