The Italian national time trial champion for women, Vittoria Guazzini (FDJ Suez), emerged victorious as Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek) was demoted for her team car’s excessive proximity, which decreased the airflow around the rider.
After finishing 0.95 of a second ahead of Guazzini, Longo Borghini was disqualified from the race after the race officials conferred for half an hour. They concluded that Longo Borghini should be fined twenty-five seconds for not adhering to the new, minimum rider-to-team vehicle gap that took effect on January 1, 2023. According to reports from Italy, the team car was told to drop back but did not comply.
In the most recent official results, Longo Borghini came in second, trailing Guazzini by 24 seconds. Guazzini will now represent Italy in the time trial at the Olympics in Paris.
After posting an early fast pace, Elena Pirrone (Roland) was the fastest rider for a considerable amount of time. She finished third at 1:02, followed by Gaia Masetti (AG Insurance-Soudal) in fourth place at 1:06.
The Under women’s champion was Federica Venturelli, who triumphed over Carlotta Cipressi and Francesca Pellegrini, the teammates from UAE Development.
Italian professional racing cyclist Vittoria Guazzini is presently a member of the UCI Women’s WorldTeam FDJ–Suez. She also belongs to Polizia di Stato’s Gruppo Sportivo Fiamme Oro, which is the national police force’s sports division.
