Wednesday saw the quiet passing of Cavan resident Bridget Tierney “in the tender care of her very devoted family, in her 109th year”.
Ms. Tierney had nine children, thirty grandchildren, forty-nine great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. She also survived pandemics and world wars.
Her sons John and Tom, sons-in-law John Joe, Peter, John Joe, and Colm, daughters-in-law Maureen and Eileen, and her daughters Mary, Margaret, Pauline, Betty, and Kitty will all “sadly miss her adoring family,” who considered her a “cherished” grandmother.
Her spouse Patrick, son Vincent, daughter Patricia, brother-in-law Joe, brothers James and Sonny, and sister Elizabeth all passed away before her.
Tom, Ms. Tierney’s son, stated that his mother raised nine children while working on the family farm in July of last year, when she celebrated her 108th birthday.
He said to The Anglo Celt that he used to bring Ms. Tierney “a good mug of tea” when she woke up in the morning.
“What sort of a day is it?” she would ask her son, and then, “What have you lined out for the day?”
He expressed to the newspaper how “very proud” he was of his mother and how she treated visitors with the utmost respect.
“A kiss on the hand is given to each and every visitor as a token of gratitude. She is a little bopping angel, nothing more.
On Thursday, February 29, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., and on Friday, March 1, from 1 p.m. to 4.30 p.m., Ms. Tierney will rest in her Drumgore home. On Saturday, March 2, at 12 p.m., there will be a funeral mass for her, and she will then be buried in the nearby cemetery.
