Cricket Australia said “The government’s advice is that conditions for women and girls in Afghanistan are getting worse. For this reason, we have maintained our previous position and will postpone the bilateral series”; Afghanistan Cricket Board not immediately available to comment
Australia has cancelled a T20 series against Afghanistan, citing a deteriorating human rights situation for women and children in the Taliban-ruled country, Cricket Australia (CA) announced on Tuesday.
Australia pulled out of a one-day series set for March last year in the United Arab Emirates after the Taliban placed draconian restrictions on Afghan women, including prohibiting them from attending universities.
The teams were set to play three T20 matches in the UAE in August of this year, but CA announced that the series had been cancelled following negotiations with the Australian government.
“The government’s advice is that conditions for women and girls in Afghanistan are getting worse,” the cricket board said in a statement.
“For this reason, we have maintained our previous position and will postpone the bilateral series against Afghanistan.”
CA stated that it will consult with its Afghan counterpart and the International Cricket Council to “…determine what actions could be taken to support the resumption of bilateral matches in the future.”
Afghanistan’s women’s squad was dismantled, and several members fled the country after the Taliban took over in 2021. Australia also cancelled a one-off Test against Afghanistan in Hobart that year.
