The Women in Non-Traditional Trades Scholarship (WiNTT), a program designed to assist women in dispelling misconceptions and preparing for their ideal careers, is now accepting applications.
A one-time $5,000 grant will be made to 400 women as part of the scheme to help them pursue qualified VET programs at WA TAFE institutions starting in 2024.
In order to lower training obstacles and encourage greater worker participation in historically male-dominated areas like building and construction, automotive and electrical, engineering, and mining, the Cook Government is investing $3 million over four years, of which the WiNTT program is a component.
A new campaign to promote the scholarships highlights Daisy Hillam, an apprentice carpenter in her second year at North Metropolitan TAFE who is finishing her Certificate III.
Daisy was anxious to work in a field that was predominately male and uncertain about how she would pay for the apprenticeship, but she has discovered that her job is more interesting and rewarding than she could have ever anticipated.
Daisy qualified for the 2022 Master Builders Apprentice of the Year Awards, participated in the 2022 WorldSkills Regional Competition, and attended the first-ever WorldSkills Excellence Forum in Brisbane thanks to her training.
Daisy exhorts women who are thinking about pursuing a trade to “go for it” and is delighted to represent women in the construction industry.
Less than 12 percent of the 2,500 women enrolled in courses that qualify for the program at this time are women, and the WiNTT scholarship is intended to encourage more of them to do so.
Over the next four years, WiNTT will give 400 scholarships to women—100 of which will be awarded in 2024—so they can train in non-traditional trades at WA TAFE colleges.
By covering costs like tuition, learning materials, tools, work clothes, PPE, work permits and licenses, transportation, lodging, and childcare, scholarship funding will help to lower the financial barriers that women frequently encounter when pursuing training and upskilling.
Recipients of scholarships will also receive specialized coaching and support services to assist them finish their education and make a smooth transition into the workforce in their field of choice.
Women who enroll in approved programs (full- or part-time), apprenticeships, or traineeships will be eligible for scholarships; there will be 20 scholarships offered by each WA TAFE college.
